Well, our HDTV apparently doesn't support HDCP (I hate these abbreviations, and so much research and I still don't understand HDCP fully).
Longer story:
A while ago, we got a new 768p (like wtf, why not 720?) HDTV, we're all like YAYAYAY! Also our first transition to digital TV. Our cable box is a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD. We got an HDMI cable and it was really nice how we didn't need any audio cables etc.
Some time after, (honestly I've no idea as I've forgotten) while watching TV, a message suddenly appeared. Out of nowhere. "DVI/HDMI output is blocked. Press EXIT to cancel" So we press EXIT and it's all great. Nothing happens, we're back to normal. Then, it happens again (maybe more than one more time, again, this was a WHILE back), and this time, when you press EXIT, instead of going back to normal, it displays a message (ugh, can't totally remember what it said, I'll guess), that says "Your HDTV does not support HDCP. blah blah blah switch out your HDMI cables for component etc. etc." That's probably totally off the exact, but I think it's the general idea. After switching cables (!!! SUCH A HASSLE IT'S HORRIBLY ANNOYING!), everything's great again, but presumably it's not as good quality. So after a while again, we try HDMI again. HDMI works great for another while, then we get the same stupid messages, occasionally being able to cancel. So I think we switched it again, then again back to HDMI for the THIRD time. Now we come to the present.
About... a week ago, I've occasionally been getting that same "blocked" message, but been able to cancel as always. Today, I wasn't able to cancel. It brought me to the fatal error of please switch your cables. Desperate, I messed around with turning TV/Cable on/off, switching TV sources back and forth etc. etc. AMAZINGLY I got the message to go away, and things were back to normal (AGAIN), but I'm sure (AGAIN) the error will appear.
I did some research a while back and found that it seems we just have a very problematic and highly disliked product. (GO US!). I've seen threads where people are urging people to contact the company and get some sort of firmware upgrade or whatever. Something of the sort. I know my dad once called, but strangely he forgot what they had said, but he knew it was nothing helpful.
Recently we got another HDTV, this time 1080p, with ( ) the same cable box, just the newer version. This newer version, as research (and personal experience) showed, was just as bad as the previous one, being better and worse in different categories. We've had cases when it simply DIES. Literally. Just DIES. Then, on the next power-on, it does something, and magically comes back to life.
So far we haven't had any serious problems, but it MAY have displayed that cancelable "blocked" message before, not sure though.
What I'm frustrated about however is the fact that this problem can be CANCELED!
It says "THERE'S A PROBLEM OMG!"
Then, right below that, it says "HAHA JK JUST CANCEL IT!"
Then, it says "ILLEGAL ILLEGAL CHANGE YOUR CABLES, HDCP IS BROKEN EVEN THOUGH YOU'VE BEEN USING IT FOR MONTHS/YEARS BEFORE THIS!"
That to me makes no sense. But that's technology
Comment if you like, I appreciate it if you've read everything. I'm not as concerned about getting this one fixed. It's inconvenient, but there are reasonable workarounds.
