You actually answered the problem yourself in one word: "active".
What happened is you actually got disconnected from the Leaderboards, but the way it works is it doesn't kick you properly., so you "lagged out". At this point you can't really chat with anyone since they will not see your messages. You need to log out and then back in again.
In 1.50 when you get disconnected like this it will just automatically kick you off the leaderboards instead of setting your status as inactive and not show your username.

Well... On my copy of MBP on Ubuntu, whenever I go on the Leaderboards, for an time ranging from one minute to 30 minutes or so I am on and connected, but regardless of whether or not I'm playing, on level select, or just snooping around on the main LB screen, I will suddenly get a blue lag icon, and always, a few seconds later, I disconnect with the same message in the console (terminal) saying % Fatal signal: Broken Pipe (SDL Parachute Deployed) ! I always thought that it was because I lagged out, and thought how annoying it was to not have a disconnect screen, thinking it was some sort or security feature. And when I log back it, it almost always says that I am still connected. Is this related to the issue above, or is it something else entirely?

Krishiv: well there you go. You saw the lag icon. No complaints from you here.
Pro Marbler: yeah the blue lag icon happens when you lose connection. Lose for enough time and you do get disconnected. I'm not sure what that error is, I never saw it, but go figure. Anyway if it says you're still connected, that's because the server still thinks you somehow are (when you are not). It's some odd thing and it does happen in 1.50, but in 1.50 the server does check every now and then if you really are there and if not it just removed you.
Anyway these problems won't happen in 1.50. Like I said, it just kicks you.

Just for clarification the blue lag icon can mean a few things TO MY KNOWLEDGE:
1. ping is way to high 2. major packet loss 3. connection is slow
can't do much about it other than to suck it up :S

I did some quick research and it seems like something is crashing; and that this is probably an issue with old game code. SDL seems to stand for Simple DirectMedia Layer, and the fact that the copyright of the c file I accidently downloaded is in 2002 also seems to suggest that. I should probably make a new topic for this. However, there is a possibility that the signal was sent over the network, which I have no idea if and how that works, and that suggests a crash server-side?? I'll look into it. It might also be an issue with the buggy sound system.
