not sure if you're already doing this, but if you create a new IcoSphere, then do Shift-G (Select -> Similar to Selection), you can get some crazy patterns on a sphere.. there are different options for vertex, line, and face modes, too. I just found this script (2nd one on page) to generate different types of spheres, chronosphere.home.comcast.net/~chronosphere/blender-plugins.htm

Bumping my own topic (woohoo) That plugin looked good but it made patern even worser than icosphere. Spent around an hour to figure it out but solution was fairly simple. Marble is coming in minigolf CGL and will be added here after release. Main issue with making something as detailed as golf ball is limitation of face size that MBG's engine has.
