The
Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD
I've seen about 99% negative comments around the internets and I agree with most all of them.
It just sucks. I don't want to go into the details, but if any of you have it, you'll know what I'm talking about.
However, the biggest thing that's really starting to frustrate me is this HDCP issue.
We have two HDTVs, one Phillips 768p Plasma and another Toshiba 1080p LCD, bought in that order. Each has the same DVR, one I THINK (not positive) slightly more updated.
Some time after having the first TV/DVR, we got a strange message:
Copy Protection
DVI/HDMI Output is Blocked
Press Exit to Cancel
WTF?
This message has occurred NUMEROUS times on the first TV. Sometimes, if you press Exit, it cancels, but OTHER times, if you press Exit, it brings up another message, complete with a nice little graphic, explaining that we must remove the HDMI cable and use a component cable. The title says something like Your Display does not support HDCP.
When it doesn't cancel, it won't output anything else. You can switch the TV's input, and when you bring it back to the cable input, the show will come up fine for a couple seconds, then relapse into the Copy Protection message.
A couple times we have resorted to using component/S-Video because it just wouldn't cooperate. Then, I would revert back to HDMI, and IT WOULD WORK!!!!!!!!!! GAAAAAAAAH. I could go back and forth forever, but the problem isn't getting solved.
Luckily, we haven't been completely locked out with out new TV, but the INITIAL message, the Copy Protection one, HAS come up once at least.
Looking around for info, I know it's GOT to be an issue with HDCP. Somehow the TV and DVR aren't communicating correctly. The issue happens sporadically, with no pattern as far as I can tell. And clearly after all the time between our two TVs, the issue never got fixed.
I have no idea what to do or if this can even be solved. I'm almost positive if we were to contact our cable provider they'd just tell us not to use HDMI and we can't do anything. I don't expect you to know anything but I'm asking if any of you do happen to.
(btw I'm writing this because it happened again on the old TV, and I just got really frustrated. I even tried totally unplugging the DVR. Didn't work.)
